Autogenic Training for Psychological Relaxation

This protocol is an effective psychological relaxation procedure. Prepare yourself by wearing comfortable loose clothing, sitting or lying in your most comfortable place. Plan a time when you will not be interrupted or distracted. A quality headset makes for the most enjoyable listening.

Autogenic training involves a series of self-statements to induce relaxation. Autogenic literally means ‘self-regulation’. For example “my right arm feels warm and heavy” can come to initiate a feeling of ‘heaviness and warmth’ in that arm which IS a state of relaxation. Autogenic training requires the most time, effort and practice to master. It will require weeks to learn; but, once learned and incorporated into a routine, you will have armed yourself with a skill that can be profoundly useful in maintaining a calm, stress-free body and in preventing an increasing list of stress-related medical problems.

If you have taken these protocols sequentially–listening and learning one before going to the next–you will have accomplished something for yourself from which you should experience a great deal of pride.
